TOEFL

The purpose of The TOEFL® test (Test of English as a Foreign Language™) is to examine the aptitude of nonnative speakers of English. It is also to encourage them to utilise the English language as it is spoken, written, and heard in college and university settings.

• Reading measures the ability to understand academic reading matter.
• Listening measures the ability to understand English as it is used in colleges and universities.
• Speaking measures the ability to speak English.
• Writing measures the ability to write in a way that is appropriate for college and university course work.

This reputed testing system is usually adopted by those who need an admission into colleges or universities, where English is used in all forms of communication. Many certification agencies and scholarship programs utilize the TOEFL system to determine the level of English of those people who do not speak English as a first language.

The flexibility of the TOEFL test reaches out to masses because it is offered in different formats depending on a test taker's location. The two types of formats available in Singapore are the iBT and the paper-based test.

The TOEFL® iBT (Internet-based test)

This format is an Internet-based Test which examines the common English language skills that are crucial for effective communication. Compared to the paper-based test, the iBT aims to provide more enhanced information and can capture speech and scores in a more standardised manner. Students can even register online and view their score reporting with easy access.

The TOEFL is open to non-native English speakers who are at the 11 th grade or above to determine their competency in English before they proceed to higher education.
